The tales... the myths... the stories... Hollywood. What evil they can bring.
You are taught that you must act. You must act passionately. When wronged. Vengeance! Manliness! Justice!
A tragedy so inevitable it is when the poor protagonist is scratched by some hurt and he is f0rced, absolutely compelled, to a course of action that he knows is his downfall. Because he can't ignore the insult. He can't ignore the injustice of it all. He must act immediately, emotionally, perhaps with some tears for the consequences.
Empathy is for after his persecutor is cut down, and the sirens blare to carry away the poor vigilante. Empathy for both. The punishment too severe. The committer of the crime that must be punished.
If the victim of the original hurt simply bears the hurt because he can. Empathizes with, even befriends his misguided brother, the story goes off the tracks. The audience pulls back. Maybe bored. Maybe skeptical. Is it propaganda? Is it Disney? Are we being treated like ch1ldren?
My point is not that these constant influences upon us are dubious mirrors to view reality. Or that there is some need in us for this kind of drama in us all. But that when one of those critical life events occurs, one of those moral turning points... you invariably find yourself alone. Your friends and family are never any good because the situation is always somehow unique. Hollywood has got it all wrong. Forget about the philosopher or the priest. It is just you, that key moment, and your fate.
It is reassuring maybe, a source of comfort, to reach out and touch a warm hand. Or to get carried off by a wonderfully made tale from some talented troupe. But when the chips are down, when your demons are coming for you, when your back is against that slippery wall... it is your own wits, and your own sense, your own view of how life should be, what you know in your guts matters... that you go to for your decision. You measure what's right, how strong you are, the consequences from all the angles that matter, and you play your hand.
If you survive and thrive, free and strong. If your eye views the outcome with delight at this mark you made on the world... then you surely have some glimmering of what character is.
