The sniffer to electric impulses technology already exists in militaries. Used to ID chemicals remotely. The only thing needed is to package it with cam and have an inverse device instead of ID readout. (unless the user is into that kinda thing) The inverse device takes electric signals and converts to odors - not so far - fetched if the choices are limited.
In fact for that couple determined to be the first I'll bet it can be done for a hefty price. This is not virtual reality because it would actually convert odor to odor. The inverse device could be a slave for example responding to audio cues and taking the appropriate action, smearing this under nose now, that spray into air then....

My only issue would be what is the odor that comes through isn't pleasant? That could ruin the whole fantasy.

I can recall one instance and perhaps fall for isn't the right word. It was more like what was the traditional model/customer relationship morphed into friends and it got to the point where I was going on vacation with friends and it just so happened it was to where said model lived. I know none of y'all will believe me, but that's what happened. She had a boyfriend and I had a girlfriend, so I knew that it was never gonna be anything substantial. We met once, went for a few drinks and I hear from her occasionally.
