Just starting this off for others to add their suggestions.

A couple of points from posts in different forums in the last few days:

Please turn the CAPS LOCK off. People don't like to see headers or posts all in capitals.

A tip for all models: if you are quoting someone's text in your post, please leave a couple of blank lines before you start your own text. Otherwise your text can be blotted out. (It looks different from the members' side than it does from your side. Not sure why)

I would add :

Usually it is not necessary to quote the post you are replying to, especially if it is the most recent post in the thread. (Quite often a very long post is quoted in full, but the response is only a line or two)

and :

Try to choose a meaningful subject heading (title) when you start a new topic to make the thread easier to find in the future. For example "Hello" is not a meaningful heading, "Neville Nutsack says hello" is better

Alternatively, you can edit the quoted post down to the section relevant to your reply.

I know this a tech question, but I'll ask here anyway :) How do you partially quote text? Whenever I try, it doesn't highlight, which is confusing to the reader. (appears that I'm talking to myself)

How do you partially quote text?

chinmusic, use the "Quote" button at the bottom of the post you want to partially quote and all of that post will initially appear at the start of your post between "quote begin" and "quote end" markers. Then delete those parts of the quoted text you DON'T want to appear in your partial quote. The text that remains between the "quote begin" and "quote end" markers will be highlighted in blue at the start of your post

:thumbsup

What jeff said above plus be careful not to delete any colon : around quote_end or quote_begin...they are part of the quote command.

Tip: to include a link to another page

If you want to draw attention in your post to another page (eg forum topic, bio page or VOD) then you should:

1. go to the page that you want people to see

2. click on the page address at the of the page to select it

3. right-click and select Copy

4. go back to the page where you are creating or editing your forum post

5. right-click and select Paste where you want the link to appear (preferably on a new line)

Note: if you want to paste more than one link you should include a separate line with some ordinary text between the links. Otherwise you tend to get partial links that don't work

Tip: editing your posts

After you have posted here you have 2 hours in which you can change what you have written. Simply go to your post and select the Edit option. When you have made your changes then select Post Your Reply. It will overwrite the original post.

I think the 2 hours editing period is mainly there so that people can tone down comments they might make in the heat of the moment. However, it is always a good idea to look at what you have written a few minutes after you have posted, to see that it says what you intended to say. :)

Just adding to what Ronnie said above :

You can't actually delete a post, however you can edit it back so that nothing remains

:thumbsup

Annie has just asked in another topic about how to include a link to a VOD in a forum post.

For anyone wanting to include a link (to another topic, VOD, bio page etc) I hope the advice at post #10 here is helpful. :drinkup :)

I have one to add. KEEP ON TOPIC. I've seen a number of posts morph into someting that has nothing to do with what the original author was intending

:twocents I don't think people are too lazy. I realy do think that many people don't know that it is possible to edit quotes down. And sometimes it is important to quote because the last comment in the list might be off topic from what was originaly posted :thumbsup

That's just a segue H_E. As long as the one making the transition in subject does so to make a point then brings it back home by the end of their post it's usually not a problem. :thumbsup

Tip: to go direct to the last post in a topic

On any forum page, when you click on a topic it will take you to the first post in a topic.

However, if you click on the date and time in the "Last Post" column it will take you direct to the last post in a topic.

Very grateful to Jeffie for that tip, posted in another topic today. I have been using the forums for 2 years now and didn't know about it. Hope it helps others :thumbsup

Quick bump for this topic. :)

I've been seeing a number of posts in different forums here where the quotes and links (and even the posts themselves) don't turn out right. There are some tips here

Remember that you can check your posts after you have posted them. If they don't look right (eg if the links don't work) you will see from this topic that you have 2 hours in which to make any changes :bulb
