I like your emphasis on the performer, ChrisDK, and am impressed at the descriptions of your conscious efforts to help create a positive, supportive atmosphere in a room. In my experience, a performer who feels appreciated shows appreciation for his room participants as well as those who take him private; the mood is better, the relationships are closer.
The more members tipping, the greater the commitment to the experience of all involved. Anonymity doesn't lend itself to that closeness, though I have occasionally tipped anonymously if I'm in a room of 'unfriendlies'. I also understand the other reasons stated in this thread for doing so, but I can't imagine badgering another member over whether they tip openly or anonymously, or about anything else that takes attention away from the performer.
