I was at level 36 and I get a pop up congratulating me on reaching level 36. Now it displays level 35.
It has happened before that I dropped a lot of levels. I estimate my true level at around 50.

Lifetime Status
- Your Lifetime Status is determined by the number of points you earn (by interacting on the site), and shown as a crest on the navigation bar and in the chat rooms.

adding on to what NobodyUNo said, that is correct your level will change based on your activity and spending habits. The rewards will only look back 365 days, so each day there is a potential loss of points depending on the 366th day that is no longer being looked at. If you had earned lets say 1,000 points on that day it would fall off and it would no longer be counted toward your level. Thus creating a potential decrease in level, depending on your current activity. Quote
